Join Deepa Natarajan, founder of plantspeople for an afternoon of exploring natural dyes. You'll learn about plants available locally to extract color from, mordants, and fiber preparation. Focus will be on a couple of plants and a variety of extraction and application techniques. We'll create samples in a variety of fibers, mordants and dyes that can be created into an artist's journal page. There will also be time to discuss medicinal dyes, paint making, history and a variety of other topics related to plant-based color.

ABOUT DEEPA PREETI NATARAJAN

Deepa has spent ten years working for the University of California Botanical Garden at Berkeley, as the public program coordinator, furthering her pursuit of ethnobotany. She has presented a wide variety of courses and events in traditional medicine, natural dyes and fibers, paper making, soap making, cooking and many other uses of plants, and also coordinating the garden's first ever "green gala," a sustainable fashion show. Deepa believes that gardens can be a source of all things we need, from foods to medicines, garments to shelters, beauty and inspiration. She is an avid natural dyer and gardener residing in Berkeley, CA with her curious toddler, song-writing husband and two dogs.
