LEARNING TO SEE - A PHOTOWALK

Are you ready to take your fall foliage photography to the next level? Join Truckee-based professional photographer Grant Kaye on a casual walk around the aspen groves along CA Route 267 between Kings Beach and Northstar as he helps you build on foundations to fully unleash your creative vision. Learn strategies for better composition, pre-visualization, and the use of smartphone apps to anticipate and plan for shooting during better lighting conditions. We will also cover fundamentals of photography, including creative long exposures with slow shutter speeds, along with use of depth of field to bring your vision to life through photography. This workshop will specifically aim to create fantastic images of colorful fall leaves. Any kind of camera is welcome in this workshop, as Grant will focus the session on fundamentals of composition and learning the art of "seeing" instead of focusing on the technical aspects of photography. Those with SLR cameras will be able to make use of manual controls, so if you have or can borrow an SLR it is highly recommended. Participants will be informed via email of the specific meeting location on the side of CA Route 267 the day before the workshop.

Students will be required to sign a liability waiver to participate in this class.  As this class takes place in the outdoors, it is subject to weather. If the weather forecast is determined to be unsafe or conducive to photography, students will be notified as far in advance of the class as possible. The alternative date for this class is the following day. If the alternative date is not suitable to your schedule, or if both dates experience inclement weather, Atelier will offer you a voucher towards a future workshop equal in value to the cost of this one. Inclement weather make up date is OCT 8.

ABOUT GRANT KAYE

Hawai`i-born photographer Grant Kaye left a career in volcano geology in New Zealand and relocated to Truckee, California in 2008, where he eventually became a full-time photographer and educator. Grant specializes in landscape and night-sky photography, motion-controlled timelapse, and creative dSLR filmmaking. He loves to teach other people how to achieve their creative photographic vision. Grant joined the Mountain Workshops in Kentucky as their timelapse coach in 2013 and 2014, and he also taught photography at Nevada's Shooting the West Workshops in 2015, 2016, and 2017. Grant is happiest making photographs where the division between technology and art is blurred - pushing the limits of what his gear is capable of to create unique images that evoke the emotional connection everyone has with nature and art, especially when they don't realize it.
