SESSION FIVE: Monday, March 5, 2018, 4-6PM

Come draw from what is possibly the most intriguing subject matter: the body. This studio class, for people with a firm foundation in drawing skills, will consider the human form in its many curves and angles. We will start with very short poses to loosen up, then gradually settle in for longer poses. The focus will be on proportions and composition, as well as on creativity and expression in drawing from the model.

PLEASE BRING THE FOLLOWING: (these items are available for sale at Atelier if needed)

  • lightweight easel
  • drawing paper, (recommended minimum size 18” x 24”)
  • board
  • clamps
  • drawing media (charcoal/pencil/ink/conté)
  • stumps for blending
  • eraser

Pre-registration is strongly encouraged for this series. Walk-ins are welcome.

Michele’s love for art grew out of an early exposure to the New York art scene. As a child, her mother regularly took her to museums, galleries and the theater. Moved by what she experienced, Michele began to draw and paint at an early age, especially focusing on the figure. The skills developed through drawing from the figure become the basis from which you can develop as an artist in any other medium. As a graduate student in printmaking, a trip to Florence, Italy for an intensive printmaking course completely changed the direction of Michele’s work. Having fallen in love with the landscape and people of Italy, she began to paint “en plein air” in pastel, and would return to Italy often, to paint.

Over the years, she shifted her focus to oils, and has deepened her attachment to the landscape, especially to mountain wilderness and the remote backcountry. She regularly hikes, backpacks, and takes mule pack trips to paint in these unspoiled and secluded areas in the Eastern Sierra, not far from her home in Lake Tahoe, CA.

Michele has studied plein air painting with Kevin Macpherson, Jean LeGassick, Ken Auster, Karl Dempwolf, and Randall Sexton, among others. Her work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the Oil Painters of America 2103 National Juried Exhibition in Fredericksburg, TX; the Oil Painters of America 1st Annual Juried Salon Show in Petoskey, MI, the Oil Painters of America 2014 Western Regional Juried Exhibition in Carmel, CA, the California Art Club’s “A Century of Landscapes” at the California Historical Society in San Francisco, CA; the “American Women Artists 2009” National Juried Exhibition and Competition at the South Street Gallery in Easton, MD, where she received an award of merit, and the 2008 North Tahoe Plein Air, judged by Jean Stern, where she was awarded Best in Show. Her work has been exhibited in galleries on both East and West coasts, and exists in private collections throughout the United States and Canada.

Michele received her Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees from the California College of the Arts in Oakland, California. She is a member of the Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society, California Art Club, Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, and American Women Artists.
