ateliertruckeeLast day of #sketchevent, time to decorate that cover! We love the strongly graphic and somewhat retro style of @draplin. Inspired by this image we want you to create something that represents you as a human and as an artist. A seal, a crest, a badge, an artist’s stamp, call it what you want, but make it graphic and strong! You can pick and choose from your favourite techniques and concepts we’ve been playing with over the last few weeks: cut out paper, symmetry, places, folklore, shapes, realism, imagination. Whatever tickled your fancy, today is the day to make it yours!
Day 20: Mandala
ateliertruckeeIt’s the second last day of #sketchevent, DAY 20, time to relax, unwind, destress. Meditate and center yourself today with a mandala drawing, using this one by @caravanessa.art as inspiration. We’d especially love you to incorporate dot work, or #pointillism, like she has. Mandalas are usually symmetrical and circular, with the design radiating from four points, like those on a compass. You’ll want to use your Micron for the dots, but it would be fun to work with your gel pen for some color in the line work.
Day 19: A place and its "things"
ateliertruckeeIt's Day 19! Let's hear it for #sketchevent!! Today we want you to use sketching as a means to travel the world through your imagination and memories. Inspired by this drawing by @lisacongdon, pick a favourite city you’ve travelled to. Write its name in big letters and then surround it with all the things you remember, all the things you loved. Foods, buildings, transport, local words, the minutiae of daily life that makes foreign cities so wonderful. You can use your Micron for a black and white image like Lisa, but if there are important colors in your memories make sure you add them too.
Day 18: Shadow
ateliertruckeeHappy day 18 of #sketchevent !!!We're almost there ya'll!! Inspired by the illustration work of @alockstadt today is all about shadow. Pick your subject, something that can be in front of you while you draw. Sketch your subject with either Micron or pencil, then pick up your Tombow and focus on the shadows, coloring them in whatever amazing color your Tombow happens to be. You might find you start seeing shadows that you weren’t conscious of when you first started the sketch.
Day 17: Balance & Reflectional Symmetry
ateliertruckeeIt's day 17! Today we’ll play with balance and reflectional symmetry. Think of a mountain and it's reflection in a lake. We're inspired by @chappawitz and his design studio @olab.wtf! This logo had its beginnings in reflectional symmetry and contains the shape of a mountain in the name Kit, for mountaineer Kit Deslauriers. Start with your initials, add reflectional symmetry and see what kind of shape it creates. Keeping balance in mind add, subtract, adjust, until you have an image you like. Begin with the Blackwing and move to the Micron as your shape begins to feel complete, even if it's no longer recognizable as your initials. Bonus if you can represent your personality too! @chappawitz also hosts #socialsketch tonight in the shop! Join us for this special #sketchevent from 5-7!
Day 16: Personal Folklore
ateliertruckee Let's hear it for day 16 of #sketchevent!! Whether working on clay or on paper @dianafayt's surfaces are alive with delicate drawings and fanciful figures. Often part folklore and part personal narrative, she draws inspiration from the world around her as well as from her Hungarian heritage. So far we’ve taken a lot of inspiration from the world around us, so today we want to know if there's a piece of folklore from your personal heritage that you really connect with? A fairytale, a nursery rhyme, a myth? Let’s see an element of it brought to life on your page.
Day 15: Life Size object with Details
ateliertruckeeIt's day 15. And we're loving all of your #sketchevent posts!! @sophietivonaillustration has such a perfect eye for detail and scale, illuminating the subtle beauty of objects. Inspired by her work, today we want you to step outside your door or look around your house, and find any object that takes your fancy. The only caveat is that is must be smaller than your page because today you’re going to draw your object life size, paying close attention to all the little details. You can use watercolors or colored pencils if you have them, or the Blackwing or Micron is great too.
Day 14: Embroidery or the like
ateliertruckeehappy #sketchevent Day 14! Embroidery, like drawing, is quite often done freehand with designs emerging as you go. There is beauty and a little bit of magic in starting work without knowing how it might turn out. This is how @happycactusdesigns likes to creates her beautiful floral embroideries. Today we want you to create some magic. Pick up a needle and thread — or string, yarn, dental floss, whatever else you might have at hand — and start embroidering your paper. You can pre-draw your design with the Blackwing if you need to! Start by experimenting with different line lengths of thread and see where it takes you.
DAY 13: Spirit Animal Self Portrait
ateliertruckeeIt's day 13 of #sketchevent! What's art without a little whimsy? @eunkangkoh's work is pure whimsy, but with a deeper purpose. She creates half-human half-animal figures with the understanding that we are programed to see things in a certain way which might actually blind us to the reality. You might look like you but underneath we know there's a spirit animal that contains your true essence. One part self portrait, one part animal drawing, we want to see you as your spirit animal! Use your Blackwing or Micron and add color if that's what your spirit animal requires.
Day 12: Find the Hidden Light
ateliertruckeeHappy Friday and 12 of #sketchevent all! @itisstillabeautifulworld takes a photo every day, seeking out the beauty in the world around us. Today we want you to take a leaf out of her book. Sit down in your sketching spot, wherever that may be, and look around. Is there a patch of light illuminating something in a special way? Or creating a striking shadow? Are objects lining up in an interesting way? Or is there a fun juxtaposition of textures? Maybe there's one color that pops against the others? Find a little haven of beauty that you would have overlooked, and draw it for this #sketchevent prompt!
Day 11: Repetition & Shape
ateliertruckeeWelcome to #sketchevent day 11 ! Shape is one of the fundamental elements of art and design. @aud_bod makes something as simple as a shape sing in her watercolors. Today we want you to create an ode to the beauty of a shape. Pick a single shape and draw or paint repetitions of that shape so that they build up to create an even bigger shape. You might make a bigger version of the initial shape, or let those shapes create a whole new shape. If you want to add color, consider subtly different shades of the one color, like @aud_bod does.
Day 10: Collage
ateliertruckeeLet's hear it for day 10 of #sketchevent !! One of the fun things about working with collage is that it really lends itself to improvisation and unexpected outcomes. Happy accidents. Inspired by @marykennyart, today we want you to put your pens and pencils away and grab the scissors and glue. Using only collage materials — the ones we included or other pieces you have at home — start cutting out shapes and images and place them on your page, see what kind of happy accidents occur. We'd love you to step away from reality today and come up with something closer to surrealism.
Day 9: Architecture
ateliertruckeeIt's day 9 of #sketchevent !!Drawing a building is a really great way to work on key art principles: proportion and perspective. @_hollywebber_ uses her Blackwing pencil to draw all sorts of interesting buildings with a beautiful eye for proportion, perspective and architectural detail. Plant yourself smack in front of a building that you find interesting and see where your Blackwing takes you. If the weather isn't great for sitting outside, take a photo of the building and then draw from that.
Day 8: Patterns in Animals
ateliertruckeeRepost :: Today is day 8 we're going to play in that wonderful artistic space where reality and imagination meet each other. Inspired by @easyreider's animal paintings, we want you to pick a wild animal and draw it as a realistic line drawing. Once it's complete, divide sections off and start filling the animal in with a patchwork of imaginative patterns. You can use a combination of Blackwing, Micron and gel pen. If you have colored pencils, paints or watercolors, they would be fun too.
Day 7: Fun with Fonts
ateliertruckeeIt's time to play with that Tombow! A tool beloved by hand-letterers and modern calligraphers, the dual tips let you create a range of line weights and beautiful lettering shapes. Plus, you can add water to your page and the marker becomes a watercolor tool. Take a look at @laiaalbert's playful lettering work using both the Tombow and Micron. Choose a favorite line of poetry, or a quote from someone you admire and use your pens to give it life. Play with different line weights and shapes and use those techniques to emphasize the most important words in the sentence.#sketchevent
Day 6: Blind Contour
ateliertruckeeRepost :: Hello Day 6, aren't you amazing? @saradrawseric starts every day with a contour drawing of her coworker Eric. Let's start your day with a contour drawing! Choose a living creature you share your house with: human, animal or even a plant. Next, you'll put your Micron or Blackwing on the page and won't pick it up again until the drawing is done. Keep your eyes on the subject as you draw — don't look at the page at all! Try this again and see how different each outcome is! #sketchevent
Day 5: Sketch and Cut
It's already Day 5of #sketchevent!! Sometimes picturing things in flat 2D terms can help you reimagine them. But this doesn't mean you have to simplify! Quite the opposite. Take a look at @birdmafia's incredibly intricate paper cuts to see what we mean. Grab your square of black paper, a pair of scissors or an x-acto blade and reimagine something you're really familiar with flattened into two dimensions.
Day 4: Local Flora
It's Day 4 of #sketchevent ! @bronwengibbs is an artist who finds her creative joy in drawing the plants that are native to her area and that give the place she lives its unique character. Choose a plant native to where you live and draw it. Trees, shrubs, flowers, leaves, grasses, maybe even seaweed. Consider applying color to reflect how that plant looks during your favorite season.
Day 3: Elaborate on whats there
ateliertruckeeHappy #sketchevent Day Three! We love mixing our medias and have ideas take flight from all sorts of places. Today we want you to find a photograph — either an original, one we sent or cut from a magazine — and use your Micron to do a very simple line drawing on top of it. This is something @amandsandlin excels at. Try looking at exactly what the photo you've chosen shows and find a way to have your drawing and the photo really interact with each other.
Day 2: Your Desk
It's Day 2 ! @juneyjormpjomp is an illustrator who embraces what she likes to call the humanness of drawing. Lines that are a little rough and scratchy but still elegant. Today we want you to think like her. Show us what your #SketchEvent work space looks like. Think of simple elegant lines and don't worry if they're a little wonky. Try not to pre-sketch with a pencil and eraser, use the Micron and create your lines with confidence.
Day 1: Happy Place
ateliertruckeeHappy Day One of #sketchevent!!! Wouldn't it be wonderful if you could fit your happy place in your pocket? Or carry it around on the end of your finger? That's the marvelous thing about art, you can make that happen, just like @tworoutes did in this drawing. Grab that Micron, lean in close to your page and draw a micro version of your happy place so it will fit on the end of your finger. Don't forget to include some of the special details that make it happy for you!
